PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains complex and multifactorial, and confirmation of the diagnosis is based on a combination of physical history and clinical examination, histologic and hematologic laboratory tests, and imaging-based information. In this activity, Dr. Asher Kornbluth outlines a step-by step approach to the diagnostic workup of IBD in the context of a young woman who presents to her primary care physician complaining of intermittent symptoms suggestive of IBD. The activity takes the learner through the multiple tools for the diagnostic workup, including serologic testing for markers of inflammation, colonoscopy, ileoscopy, capsule endoscopy, small-bowel and colonic biopsies, and small-bowel radiologic imaging.
