PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Patients suffering from epilepsy have both short- (eg, seizure control) and long-term (eg, uncontrolled comorbidities and low quality of life [QOL]) unmet medical needs. In addition to regular disease activity monitoring, appropriate management of comorbid conditions, addressing the individual needs of special populations, including female and elderly patients, and QOL issues are important components of care for patients with epilepsy. The advancement of adjunctive therapies also requires discussion since newer therapies with different mechanisms of action may be more effective, and therefore could eliminate the need for multiple anti-epilepsy drug therapy in patients with epilepsy. Through education, practitioners may be able to achieve better patient outcomes in these areas of care.
