PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Despite the availability of effective treatments, the clinical management of patients with gout and hyperuricemia is widely regarded as suboptimal, with only a minority of patients receiving appropriate therapy. Treatment of gout involves managing hyperuricemia with urate-lowering therapy, including diet, lifestyle, pharmacologic agents, as well as management of acute flares. Patient adherence to long-term gout therapy is frequently suboptimal; pharmacists play an integral role in patient education and improving the care of patients with gout.In this educational program, a rheumatologist and a pharmacist explore topics related to the optimal management of gout, and strategies to improve patient adherence. The faculty discuss the need to individualize treatment targets according to the unique needs of each patient with gout, available ULT therapies and the risks/benefits of each, and methods by which a pharmacists/rheumatologist collaboration can improve gout patient outcomes.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After completing the activity, the participant should be better able to:Evaluate current recommendations for the management of patients with goutIncorporate evidence-based treatment approaches for gout in clinical practiceCounsel individuals with gout about their disease, associated lifestyle factors, nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment options, and goals of therapy
