PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
During this Medical Crossfire®, expert faculty in the field of endocrinology will engage in a roundtable discussion that includes an endocrinologist, an endocrine surgeon, a physician assistant, and a primary care professional to discuss the most recent developments in the diagnosis and management of hypoparathyroidism. Unlike primary hyperparathyroidism, which is relatively common, hypoparathyroidism has not received the same level of attention and discussion until recently, as new guidelines have been developed to help clinicians diagnose, evaluate, and manage this disorder. Concomitantly, the recent approval of recombinant human PTH replacement therapy is expected to result in dramatic changes to the treatment landscape for this condition. This panel discussion includes experience-based strategies for improving diagnosis, highlights of the new treatment guidelines and both conventional and novel treatment pathways. The program concludes with case studies to demonstrate the application of the new evidence-based guidelines.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:Articulate the burden, clinical presentation, and diagnostic features of hypoparathyroidismDetermine the benefits and challenges of conventional treatment with calcium and vitamin DExplain the efficacy, safety, and role of parathyroid hormone replacement therapy in the management of hypoparathyroidismIntegrate new guidelines on the diagnosis and management of hypoparathyroidism
