Alabama CME Requirements

Alabama Board of Medical Examiners and Medical Licensure Commission of Alabama

    25 total hours every 1 year

  • 25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
For MD/DO accreditation in Alabama, 25 CME credits are required per one year term, of which 25 must be AMA PRA category 1. The Alabama State Board of Medical Examiners does not allow the rollover of credits. Additional Requirement for Alabama Controlled Substances Certificate registrants: Every 2 years, 2 AMA PRA Category 1 CME credits relating to controlled substance prescribing practices, recognizing signs of the abuse or misuse of controlled substances, or controlled substance prescribing for chronic pain management.

Alaska CME Requirements

Alaska State Medical Board

    50 total hours every 2 years

The Alaska State Medical Board requires 50 AMA- or AOA-approved CME credits. For license renewals, at least two of the total hours of CME that are required to qualify for renewal must be specific to pain management and opioid use and addiction. Courses must be category 1 of AMA-approved education or Category 1 or 2 of AOA-approved education. For a podiatrist, it may instead be earned in a continuing medical education program from a provider that is approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME).

Arizona CME Requirements

Arizona Board of Osteopathic Examiners in Medicine and Surgery

Arkansas CME Requirements

California CME Requirements

  • 10 hours of Geriatric Care are required for General Internists and physicians with 25% or more of patients over the age of 65.
The Medical Board of California requires 50 CME hours every two years. The renewal period ends on the last day of the physician's birth month, every 2 years. Additionally, the Medical Board of California has a one-time requirement of 12 CME hours on pain management and the appropriate care and treatment of the terminally ill. Pathologists and Radiologists are exempt. The 12 hours may be any combination of pain management credits and appropriate care and treatment of the terminally credits. These hours may count towards the 50 hours for the current renewal cycle and must be completed by the physician's second license renewal date or within four years, whichever comes first.

Osteopathic Medical Board of California

The Osteopathic Medical Board of California requires 100 hours of AMA Category 1 or AOA Category 1 or 2 CME. During this time, a minimum of forty (40) hours of the 100 hours must be American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Category 1A or 1B, and a maximum of 60 hours of Category 2A or 2B CME. Additionally, the Osteopathic Medical Board of California has a one-time requirement of 12 CME hours on pain management and the appropriate care and treatment of the terminally ill. The 12 hours may be any combination of pain management credits and appropriate care and treatment of the terminally credits. These hours may count towards the 50 hours for the current renewal cycle and must be completed by the physician's second license renewal date or within four years, whichever comes first. Pathology and Radiology specialists are exempt.

Colorado CME Requirements

Colorado Physicians are not required by the Colorado Medical Board to obtain continuing education. However, Physician Assistants are required one hundred hours of CME every two years, including 25 hours of Category 1 CME within the past twelve months. Connecticut CME Requirements

The Connecticut Medical Examining Board requires 50 CME hours every two years in the area of the physician's practice. Additionally, during a physician's first renewal period, and once within every six year period after, at least one credit is required in each of the following categories: cultural competency, domestic violence, infectious disease (which includes, but is not limited to, AIDS and HIV), risk management, including, but not limited to, for registration periods beginning on or after October 1, 2015, prescribing controlled substances and pain management, sexual assault, cultural competency, and behavioral health.

Delaware CME Requirements

The Delaware Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline requires that a physician must be prepared to supply the Board with proof that he has completed forty (40) hours per registration period of continuing medical education in Category I courses approved by the American Medical Association (AMA) or equivalent courses approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) since the time of the physician's last renewal of his registration.

District of Columbia CME Requirements

The District of Columbia Board of Medicine requires 50 AMA PRA Category 1 credits every 2 years, which includes three (3) hours in the subject of HIV/AIDS, two (2) hours in the subject of LGBTQ cultural competency, and at least one (1) course in the subject of pharmacology.

Florida CME Requirements

The Florida Board of Medicine requires 40 AMA CME credits every 2 years. Of these 40 hours, 2 hours must be on the topic of Medical Error (must include information regarding the 5 most mis-diagnosed conditions, in accordance with Rule 64B8-13.005, F.A.C.). In every third renewal cycle, 2 credits must be on the topic of Domestic Violence. Physicians renewing their license for the first time are exempt from the general Florida CME requirements and instead are required to complete 2 hours of Preventing Medical Errors and 1 hour of HIV/AIDS. DEA registrants are also required to complete 2 hours of a Controlled Substance Prescribing Course.

Florida Department of Health, Division of Medical Quality Assurance (DOs)

The Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine requires 40 CME hours over a 2 year licensure period. 20 of these credits must be AOA Category 1-A credits. 15 of these credits can be either AOA or AMA credits (of which; only 8 of these may be home study). Additionally, live credits are required and must consist of (2) Prevention of Medical Errors, and (1) Florida Laws and Rules/Professional and Medical Ethics. Also required is (2) hours on Prescribing Controlled Substances (This requirement applies only to licensees registered with the DEA and authorized to prescribe controlled substances). These hours are not required to be live/participatory. Additionally, for every third renewal period, the licensee must complete an additional (2) hours of Domestic Violence. Lastly, first-time renewers must also complete (1) hour of HIV/AIDS. NOTE- Osteopathic Physicians licensed after July 1 of the second year of the biennium (odd year), are only required to complete the HIV/AIDS, Florida Laws and Rules, Professional & Medical Ethics, Federal & State Laws Related to the Prescribing of Controlled Substances and Prevention of Medical Errors courses.

Georgia CME Requirements

Hawaii CME Requirements

Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners

  • 40 Category 1 or 1-A.
  • 20 Category 1 or 1-A (for Physicians licensed between 2014-2015).
The Hawaii Medical Board requires Physicians to complete 40 Category 1 or 1-A credits every two years. If you initially received your license prior to 2/1/14, you will be required to complete 40 Category 1 or 1A hours. If you initially received your license between 2/1/14 and 1/31/15, only 20 hours are required. Beginning with the 2018 renewal and thereafter, the usual 40 will be required. The Hawaii Medical Board requires Osteopathic Physicians to complete 40 Category 1 or 1-A credits every two years. If you initially received your license prior to 7/1/14, you will be required to complete 40 Category 1 or 1A hours. If you initially received your license between 7/1/14 and 6/30/15, only 20 hours are required. Beginning with the 2018 renewal and thereafter, the usual 40 will be required.

Idaho CME Requirements

The Idaho State Board of Medicine requires that those licensed to practice medicine and surgery or osteopathic medicine or surgery in Idaho shall complete no less than forty (40) hours of practice relevant, Category 1, CME every two (2) years.

Illinois CME Requirements

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation requires 150 CME credits over a 3 year renewal period. A minimum of 40% (60 hours) of the required CME hours shall be obtained in formal CME programs. (The entire 150 hour requirement may be completed in Category 1). A maximum of 60% (90 hours) of the required CME hours may be obtained in informal CME programs or activities.

Indiana CME Requirements

Iowa CME Requirements

The Iowa Board of Medicine requires 40 Category 1 CME hours over a 2 year renewal period. If more than 40 hours are accumulated, up to 20 may be carried over. The number of required Category 1 credits is pro-rated for anyone who holds a permanent or administrative medicine license that was issued for fewer than two full years. Physicians who provide primary care to patients are additionally required to complete 2 hours of Category 1 activities for chronic pain management and 2 hours of Category 1 activities for end-of-life care every five years.

Kansas CME Requirements

If you are a medical doctor whose specialty is Psychiatry, you are also required to complete a minimum of 2 hours in the area of suicide prevention and awareness.

New Jersey CME Requirements

The New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners requires 100 CME hours every two years, of which 40 must be AMA Category 1 credits and a maximum of 60 can be Category 2 credits. A one-time requirement of six accredited (AMA, AOA, AAFP, COPME) credits for cultural competence is to be completed in addition to the 100 hour requirement for physicians licensed before March 24, 2005. These credits may be included if licensed after this date.

New Mexico CME Requirements

The North Carolina Medical Board requires 60 Category 1 CME credits in topics relevant to their area of practice. Those holding a residency training license are exempt from this requirement. Physicians are not required to report any Category 2 CME. As of July 1, 2017, every physician who prescribes controlled substances (except those holding a residency training license), shall complete at least three hours of Controlled Substances CME in addition to the 60 Category 1 CME credits.

Of these hours, a minimum of 20 must be AMA PRA Category 1, a minimum of 12 must be on the subjects of patient safety and/or risk management, and a minimum of 2 must be on the subject of child abuse recognition and reporting. The remaining credits may be completed through any combination of Category 1 or Category 2 activities. Credits on the subjects of office management or practice building will not be accepted.

Pennsylvania State Board of Osteopathic Medicine

The Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners requires 40 AMA Category 1 hours. Of these, a minimum of 2 hours must be on the topic of controlled substance prescribing, which must include instruction on opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates and carisoprodol and may include instruction on topics such as medicine addiction, risk management tools and other topics approved by the Board. This 2 hours requirement is not necessary for doctors certified by the ABMS, AOA, or the American Board of Physician Specialties in one or more of the following specialties: pain management, anesthesiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, and rheumatology.

Tennessee Board of Ostepathic Examination

The Tennessee Board of Osteopathic Examination requires 40 CME hours. If you are a prescriber with a DEA registration, at least 2 of those hours must relate to controlled substance prescribing, which must include instruction in the Department’s treatment guidelines on opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates and carisoprodol and may include instruction on topics such as medicine addiction, risk management tools and other topics approved by the Board. If you do not have a DEA registration, at least 2 of the required hours must be in a course or courses designated specifically to address prescribing practices. Texas CME Requirements

Texas Medical Board

    48 total hours every 2 years

The Texas Medical Board requires 48 Category 1 credits approved by the AMA, AOA, AAFP, Texas medical Association, or the board. Of these hours, at least 24 must be formal, Category 1 or 1A credits. Furthermore, at least 2 of these formal hours must involve the study of medical ethics/personal responsibility. The remaining 24 can be informal hours; self study, attendance at hospitals, grand rounds.

Utah CME Requirements

Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing

    40 total hours every 2 years

The Utah Department of Commerce Division of Occupational and Professional Licensure (DOPL) requires 40 CME hours every 2 years, of which a minimum of 34 must Category 1 credits, and a maximum of 6 may come from DOPL. For those with a controlled substance license, 4 CME hours are required, of which 3.5 must be on the topic of substance prescribing and .5 must come from the online DOPL tutorial.

Vermont CME Requirements

Vermont Board of Medical Practice

    30 total hours every 2 years

Every two years, the Vermont Board of Medical Practice requires 30 AMA PRA Category 1 hours. Of these hours, 1 must be in hospice, palliative care, or pain management. Due to the passage of Act 173, beginning with license renewals due Nov. 2018, all physicians with a DEA number, pending application for a DEA number, or who dispense controlled substances will be required to show they have completed a total of at least 2 hours over the course of the previous 2-year licensing cycle - rather than the current one hour - of continuing education on the topic of prescribing controlled substances.

Vermont Board of Osteopathic Physicians

The Washington State Medical Quality Assurance Commission requires 200 Category 1 CME hours every 4 years. Of these, a maximum of 80 hours may be Category 2, a maximum of 80 may be earned for serving as an instructor of medical students (Category 3, and a maximum of 80 may be earned through papers, publications, books, or exhibits (Category 4). The commission will also accept certification or recertification by a specialty board as the equivalent of two hundred hours of continuing medical education.

Diplomates can earn additional CME by completing more than 9 SAMs.

The Continuous Assessment Program (CAP) Pilot is also required and consists of two five-year cycles. Each year consists of two six-month question blocks, 30 article-based and 10 core / general knowledge questions. Complete 1 Practice Assessment/Quality Improvement model every 5 years (see ABAI website for qualifying activities).

Anesthesiology CME Requirements

Importantly, no more than 70 credits per calendar year will be applied to the 250 hour requirement. Also, as of 2016, the MOCA Minute will be offered instead of the 10 year examination. The new requirement includes successfully completing 30 questions per calendar quarter. Learners must also complete 25 Points in Years 1-5 and 25 Points in Years 6-10.

The American Board of Dermatology requires a minimum of 25 CME Category 1 credits every year. Of these credits, at least half must be on the subjects of the physician's practice (typically Dermatology, but other specialties are acceptable if directly related to the practice). The American Board of Medical Specialties strongly recommends that 1/3 of each year’s CME credits (e.g., > 8 credits per year) involve CME exercises that are also self-assessment activities. Once throughout each MOC cycle the physician must complete a Personal Improvement activity. For those in their first MOC cycle, a foundational Patient Safety course is required instead. 100 self assessment credits are required by the ends of years 3, 6, and 10, for a total of 300 self assessment credits. CME self-assessment credits count towards this requirement. THE AMERICAN BOARD OF DERMATOLOGY IS CREATING A TWO-YEAR PILOT PERIOD, BEGINNING JANUARY 1, 2016, FOR DEVELOPMENT OF FOCUSED ACTIVITIES TARGETING PRACTICE IMPROVEMENT. Until 2018, no learner will risk losing certification for not completing practice improvement activities. The MOC exam requires the diplomate to take and pass a general dermatology module. Diplomates must also take a module from one of the following choices: dermatology, dermatopathology, surgical dermatology, and pediatric dermatology.

The American Board of Emergency Medicine requires an average of 25 AMA PRA Category 1 hours every year. These hours must all be related to the physician's field of practice, and a minimum of 8 must be self assessment activities. AAFP Prescribed Credit, ACOG cognates, and AOA Category 1-A Credits are considered equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credits. Since the ABEM only requires an average of 25 credits per year, credits may roll over indefinitely (ie, earning 50 credits in a single year will satisfy CME requirements for the next two years). Despite this, the ABEM encourages annual participation in CME.

Part two is Lifelong Learning and Assessment, including literature review modules and an average of 25 CMEs/year. Part three is the cognitive exam per specialty area (once every ten years). Part four is the practice evaluation/improvement modules in areas consistent with scope of practice.

The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology does not require any CME hours. However, there are some requirements as follows: Each Diplomate will receive the titles of a minimum of 45 papers from the current medical literature three times each year. A minimum of 30 of the articles that are most applicable must be read, and four questions about the content answered correctly. Each Diplomate must sit for and pass a secure, written examination in the 6th year of each MOC cycle. The examination is designed to assess the Diplomate’s level of current knowledge of the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Those who hold subspecialty certification are required to be examined in both basic OB-Gyn and their subspecialty. Additionally, completion of ABOG MOC activities may award CME credits that can be used towards other boards' requirements. NOTE: In 2016, the ABOG started a 2-year pilot program that will allow high performers on the self-assessment MOC requirements to earn an exemption from the recertification examination.

Ophthalmology CME Requirements

The evidence of cognitive expertise exam occurs at 10-year intervals. PIP (Evidence of Performance in Practice) requires submission of a case list.

Pain Medicine CME Requirements

Also beginning in 2019, Part 3 will align with your five-year MOC cycle.

Psychiatry CME Requirements

American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology

  • Continuous average of 90 Category 1 Credits over the 3 previous years (minimum 24 self-assessment credits)

The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology requires 90 CME hours every 3 years. These hours must be relevant to the physician's specialty and/or sub-specialty and can include ACCME Category 1 credits, AOA Category 1-A credits, and/or Category 1 credits accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Of these hours, a minimum of 24 hours must be self-assessed activities selected from the ABPN's Product list. NEW in February 2016: Diplomates now choose ONE Clinical Module OR Feedback Module activity to complete the PIP (Improvement in Medical Practice Unit).

Radiology CME Requirements

American Board of Radiology

  • Continual average of 75 CME credits over the 3 previous years (min 25 self-assessment credits) (years 4+)

The American Board of Surgery requires 150 Category 1 CME hours every 5 years. Of these hours, all must be on a subject relevant to the physician's practice and a minimum of 50 must be self-assessment activities, with a minimum score of 75%. This requirement will change to 125 CME credits with no self-assessment required when diplomates pass their first Continuous Certification Assessment (see below); the ABS will also waive 60 credits of CME with self-assessment for passing a secure exam, such as the Qualifying Examination in an ABS specialty. The Continuous Certification Assessment is required every other year; grace year may be granted.

The American Board of Urology requires 90 CME hours, 30 of which must be CME Category 1 Credits, to be submitted every 3 years (at level 2 and level 4). At year 6, physicians are required to complete 1 Patient Safety Module and 1 Complete Ethics Module.
