PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a respiratory disease with heterogeneous presentations, can be difficult to identify amidst the long and varied list of conditions competing for internal medicine clinicians’ (IMs’) time and attention in daily clinical practice. Once the diagnosis is made, treatment is complicated by a steady influx of both sophisticated pharmacotherapies and devices. Contributing to the confusion, recent guideline updates call for significant practice changes based on compelling new data. This audio webinar, including patient simulations, will help internists wade through the different presentations of COPD and evolving treatments and devices to improve diagnosis and maximize outcomes for patients through appropriate treatment and device selection. This education will be instrumental in helping IMs stay current with advances in COPD that can significantly improve several important outcomes, including lung function, exacerbations, hospital admissions (and readmissions), and quality of life.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon proper completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:Identify early signs and symptoms of COPD that warrant further evaluation with guideline-recommended tools and testsDescribe evidence-based tools and strategies for determining the severity of COPD, including their utility in directing appropriate therapySelect treatment options for COPD by applying information about agent, patient, and disease characteristicsChoose a medication delivery device for patients with COPD that accords with patient needs, preferences, and capabilities
