PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The prevention of HIV infection transmission requires adoption of multiple risk-mitigating strategies, including avoidance or risk behaviors, consistent condom use, and treatment with preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Although prevention strategies have been successful in certain populations, heterosexual African-American men are not adequately targeted for HIV prevention. This case vignette features a 42-year-old African-American man who is HIV-negative but whose wife is HIV-positive. In this setting, clinicians must take a comprehensive and culturally competent approach to HIV prevention to reach and treat those at greatest risk in the African-American community.
