PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) represent just 2% of the entire US population yet represent nearly 70% of all new diagnoses. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has been shown to help reduce HIV infection risk in multiple studies. Unfortunately, this prevention strategy is currently underutilized, particularly among patients who are most likely to benefit. This case study features a 23-year-old Latino MSM who presents to his clinician with symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection. In addition to treatment of his symptoms, the discussion will center on strategies for assessing HIV risk in this patient, and implementing evidence-based interventions to minimize the risk for HIV infection.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
As a result of participating in the activity, learners should be better able to: Review the potential utility of HIV prevention strategies in a 23-year-old Latino male patient with risk factors for HIV infectionsImplement evidence-based strategies, including the use of PrEP for HIV prevention for this patient
