PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Gout is a common and chronic disease; the hyperuricemia observed in patients with the condition can lead to a host of serious health consequences if left unattended or undertreated. Evidence-based recommendations suggest that serum urate should be lowered and maintained below a specific target, which should be individualized for each patient. Adherence to urate-lowering therapy over the long term is essential for positive outcomes. In this educational activity, 2 gout experts will review strategies for educating patients with gout about the potential consequences of hyperuricemia and provide guidance on both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic approaches to treatment. The importance of keeping patients engaged in treatment over the long term is also discussed.
