PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Although once considered rare, epidemiologic investigations have revealed interstitial lung disease (ILD) to be significantly more common than previously recognized. Previously, it has been reported that 80.9 per 100,000 men and 67.2 per 100,000 women suffer from ILD in the US, with 31.5 new cases diagnosed per 100,000 men per year and 26.1 new cases diagnosed per 100,000 women per year. Certain ILDs (eg, sarcoidosis, pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis, and autoimmune-associated lung diseases) appear to develop more frequently during young adulthood, whereas idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) occurs most often between the ages of 40 and 70. Both the incidence and associated mortality of ILD increases with age, and consistent with the expansion of elderly populations, recent evidence indicates that the number of new cases diagnosed per year and the mortality rates continue to rise.
