PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
While insulin is often required in many patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus because of disease progression and the loss of pancreatic β cell insulin secretion, only 28% of adults with diabetes in the United States use insulin (with or without oral antidiabetes agents), often because patients do not recognize the need for improved glycemic control, fear injections, or are concerned about adverse effects and potential changes in lifestyle. In this online educational activity, the faculty builds on the first module in the series by identifying common barriers to the transition to newer basal insulin therapies for patients with type 2 diabetes at the provider, health system, and patient levels and strategies for overcoming them. Patient cases are used to illustrate how to initiate, titrate, and switch basal insulin products taking into account patients’ preferences, abilities, and resources.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this application-based educational activity, participants should be able to:Explain common provider and health system barriers to the transition to newer basal insulin therapiesExplain how to initiate, titrate, and switch basal insulin therapies, taking into account patients’ preferences, abilities, and resourcesUsing patient cases, illustrate strategies for overcoming barriers to initiating and switching basal insulin therapy
